Confined space signs in Ontario: wording, placement and mounting that lasts
How to sign a confined space in Ontario: O. Reg. 632/05 context, confined space sign wording, where signs go on tanks, pits and hatches, and mounting.
A confined space sign is often the last thing between a worker and a tank, pit or vault that can kill them in minutes. Oxygen-deficient air, toxic gas, engulfment. None of it is visible from the hatch. The sign has to do the talking.
This post covers what Ontario's rules say about preventing entry, what the sign should read, where it goes and how to mount it so it survives the location. We're a sign shop, not a safety consultant, so treat the regulatory part as a starting point and check it against your own program.
What O. Reg. 632/05 expects
In Ontario, confined spaces are covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Ontario Regulation 632/05, Confined Spaces. The regulation requires employers to identify confined spaces, assess the hazards, put a written plan in place and control entry, usually through an entry permit.
It also requires the employer to take adequate measures to stop people from entering a confined space when they shouldn't. The regulation doesn't dictate a specific sign, but signs are one of the most common tools used to meet that duty, along with locks, bolted covers and barriers.
Wording that works
Confined space signs almost always use the red DANGER header. The hazard is life-threatening, and people should read it that way at a glance. Two wordings cover most sites:

Add a space ID
A lot of sites number their confined spaces in the hazard inventory: CS-01, CS-02 and so on. Engraving that ID on the sign ties the physical space to its assessment and entry plan. It also makes the permit easier to fill out correctly. If you send us the inventory list, we'll engrave each sign with its own ID.
Keep extra text off the sign. Hazard details, atmospheric testing requirements and rescue procedures belong in the entry plan and on the permit, not in small print on the hatch.
Where confined space signs go
The sign needs to be seen by anyone who might open or enter the space, from the direction they'd approach it. Common locations:
- Tanks and vessels. On or beside each manway, not only on the tank shell.
- Pits and sumps. On the cover or on a post or wall right beside the opening.
- Utility vaults and manholes. On the hatch, or on the nearest fixed surface if the lid is removed during work.
- Silos, bins and hoppers. At every access door and at the top-access hatch.
- Crawl spaces, ducts and tunnels. At each entry point.
Every entry point gets a sign. A tank with two manways needs two signs. It's easy to miss the second hatch on the far side, and that's exactly the one somebody uses.
Wet, dirty and outdoor locations
Confined spaces tend to live in bad environments. Wastewater plants, process tanks, underground vaults, grain storage. Signs get wet, get splashed with product and get scraped by hoses and tools.
Printed signs don't age well there. The ink fades, the laminate lifts at the edges, and eventually the sign is a blank white rectangle. An engraved lamacoid is different. The letters are cut through a coloured top layer into a contrasting core, so the message is part of the plate. You can scrub it and it's still readable. Mounting on hatches and covers
- Rivets or screws through pre-drilled holes are the most reliable on steel hatches and tank shells.
- Stainless hardware keeps rust streaks off the text in wet locations.
- Curved surfaces like small tanks may need a smaller sign, or a sign mounted on a bracket beside the manway rather than on the shell.
- Removable lids should have a second sign on a fixed surface nearby, so the warning is still there when the lid is off to one side.
- Adhesive is fine as a supplement on clean, dry, indoor surfaces, but don't rely on it alone around water.

Are confined space signs required in Ontario?

Engraved phenolic lamacoids hold up well in wet and dirty locations because the text is cut into the plate rather than printed on it. For hatches and outdoor tanks, fasten with screws or rivets rather than adhesive alone.
