WHMIS and chemical hazard signs
Signs for the rooms and cabinets where the chemicals live. Flammable, corrosive, toxic, biohazard, radiation and compressed gas, engraved into phenolic so solvent and washdown cannot take them off.
Signs that survive what is stored behind them
A chemical store is the worst place on site for a printed sign. Solvent vapour softens the adhesive, spills run down the face, and the first wipe with a rag takes the ink with it. An engraved lamacoid has no ink and no face film: the laser cuts through the surface layer and the message is the material underneath.
Phenolic is also non-conductive and does not absorb, so it can be screwed to a steel cabinet door, a cage or a bund wall and cleaned with whatever you clean the rest of the room with.
WHMIS 2015 and what a sign can and cannot do
WHMIS 2015 governs the supplier label and the workplace label on the container itself, along with the SDS and worker training. A door or cabinet sign is not a substitute for either label. What it does is tell anyone approaching the area what class of hazard is behind the door before they open it, which is exactly what the fire service and your own people need.
We engrave the hazard, the pictogram and any wording you want: product names, room numbers, emergency contacts or the line your JHSC asked for.
FAQ
WHMIS & Chemical Signs: common questions
Are these WHMIS labels?
No. WHMIS supplier and workplace labels go on the container and must carry the product identifier, hazard and precautionary statements, pictograms and supplier information. These are area and door signs that warn people what is stored behind them. Many sites use both.
Can you engrave the GHS pictograms?
We engrave a single-colour version of the hazard symbol, because a lamacoid is a two-colour plate: the surface layer and the core. The red diamond border of a GHS pictogram cannot be reproduced in two colours, so for container labelling you still need printed GHS labels.
What colour should a chemical hazard sign be?
It follows the signal word, not the chemical. DANGER is white on red, WARNING is black on orange, CAUTION is black on yellow. We will tell you which one fits if you describe the hazard.
